Seven Questions to Ask Before Booking an African Safari
Hello, fellow traveler,
A safari can be one of the most extraordinary journeys you ever take—but the right trip begins long before the first game drive. These seven questions will help you look beyond a tempting itinerary and understand whether a safari truly fits your interests, comfort level, timing and budget.
1. What do I most want to experience—and where does that make sense?
Do you picture iconic wildlife, the Great Migration, birding, photography, conservation experiences, local culture or a bush-and-beach combination? Your priorities help determine the right country, region and style of safari.
2. Why are these dates right for this particular itinerary?
Wildlife movement, rainfall, temperatures and crowd levels vary by season and location. Ask what your chosen dates are especially good for—and what tradeoffs to expect.
3. What will my days—and nights—really feel like?
Clarify wake-up times, game-drive length, meal schedules, downtime, camp atmosphere and amenities. A beautiful lodge may still be the wrong fit if the daily rhythm does not suit you.
4. Who will guide us, and how will we explore?
A knowledgeable guide can transform the experience. Ask about guide qualifications, vehicle capacity, private versus shared drives, walking safaris and whether activities match your mobility and comfort level.
5. What is the full trip cost, beyond the headline price?
Review internal flights, transfers, park fees, gratuities, drinks, laundry, travel insurance and any optional activities. A clear total makes it much easier to compare two seemingly similar trips.
6. How much of my trip will be spent getting from place to place?
Map every transfer, small-plane flight and road journey. A well-paced itinerary protects the time you came for: being present in the landscape, not constantly packing and moving.
7. What needs to be in place before I commit?
Understand deposit and cancellation terms, passport validity, entry requirements, recommended health guidance and appropriate travel insurance. Requirements can change, so confirm current official guidance before departure.
Let’s start shaping your safari.
